Eleanor-Rose Fusaro and Alyson

A – Hello Ellie
E – Hi
A – How are you today
E – I’m ok, thanks
A – Good…
You’ve chosen some paper and crayons
E – Yep, I picked blue, because its my favourite colour…. I think
A – You think its your favorite colour
E – yep [COLOURS] yep that’s a nice colour
A – are you ok if I come down and join you?
E – Yep [PASSES ALYSON THE PAPER] you can have a bit if you want
A – can I
E – um hum [HANDS ALYSON THE COLOURS] do you want to pick you’re favourite colour
A – hum, now, what’s my favourite colour…I think I’ll chose green
E – ohhh, ok
[ELEANOR COLOURS]
E – I think this one’s better.
A – you think that one’s better, you think the darker…
E – yep
A -… a bit better
E – yep…its more like the carpet
E – [COLOURS] yep…there we go
A – wow, do you want to tell me about what you’ve done
E – ummm, just drawn the carpet, basically,…it’s the same colour, and its my favourite colour and we’re sat on the carpet and that’s my favourite colour…if I make it into a rectangle shape, that’s the carpet
A – it is the carpet
E – um
A – and your sat on the carpet
E – yep
A – and that’s your favourite colour too.
E – um hum, yep….i might draw, I might draw us on it as well
A – ahh
E – do you think that’s skin colours [HOLDS UP CRAYON]
A – [HOLDS OUT HAND FOR ELLIE TO HOLD CRAYON AGAINST]…ish
E – what colour do I mix it with?
A – oh…now that’s a…[PAUSE] now it would be a good idea to try some out?
E – yeah
A – on a, on another piece of paper
E – yeah
A – maybe….cause I’m not actually sure…lets see
E – try it
A – do you want me to try?
E – we’ll do it together
A – lets do some together…oh, I can’t see that
E – that’s rubbish, I don’t like that colour
A – lets, lets try…what do you think…mixing it with…
E – orange?
A – orange, have a go
E – that’s too orange
A 0 no, do you think anyone’s that colour
E – no
A – no…I don’t think I’ve seen anyone that colour before
E – this one [COLOURS]…maybe I’ll just draw a tree instead
A – ahh…changed your mind…a tree on the carpet
E – um hum…are you going to draw anything
A – hum…I’m interested in what your drawing…then if I start to draw, I might miss something.
E – ok [COLOUR]…. I don’t think that’s the carpet anymore, I think that’s more like the sea
A – oh, right
E – or a stream next to the tree
A – a stream next to a tree…so, its changed
E – umm
A – are you pleased with it?
E – I don’t think its finished…what do you think it needs
A – you’re wondering what I consider it needs
E – um hum
A – what do you think it needs?
E – ummm, a fish?
A – a fish?
E – um hum… I’m going to et a yellow one…an orange one
A – an orange fish
E – I’m going to do two, so its got a friend…it doesn’t want to be by itself, does it?
A – so the first fish wouldn’t want to be alone?
E – no
A – no
E – it’s too big a river for it to be by itself
A – you think the fish would be lonely…
E – um hum
A – how do you think that would feel…to be alone in such a big river
E – horrible…I wouldn’t like it at all…I really wouldn’t…I’m gonna give it another friend…but then they might fall out with each other, so I’ll give one more
A – now there are four, is that all…that looks like it could be interesting…what do you think they would do all day?
E – hum…swim all day, that’s what I would do, I really would like a pool in my back garden
A – you would like a pool would you?
E – yep… my mum says I’m like a water baby
A – you’re a water baby
E – um hum
A – and that’s what your mum says about you
E – yep… and when we go on holiday, I’m always in the pool first
A – you like to get there first do you?
E – yep
A – before?
E – before everybody else
A – who’s everybody else ellie?
E – umm, my brothers…but then we have competitions
A – ah ha, what competitions?
E – to see who can do the best dive
A – and are you good at diving?
E – I’m really good at diving
A – so do you win the competitions?
E – sometimes, sometimes my brother beats me…hum…I think…is that golden?
A – hum
E – I’ll get a different colour
A – you have diving competitions
E – yep
A – on your holidays… how many brothers have you got
E – I’ve got two
A – have you got any sisters?
E – nope…no…my best friend has a sister…
A – your best friend has a sister
E – yep…she’s older than her, she pushes her around…I don’t want an older sister…I’d like a younger sister though
A – you’d like a younger sister
E – yep
A – where do you come with your brothers? are you the oldest?
E – I’m the middle
A – you’re the middle…what’s that like, being in the middle with two brother
E – hummm, well, one tells me off all the time and the other one moans at me all the time, and I don’t like it
A – you don’t like it…that sounds a bit tough
E – it is
A – being told off and moaned at
E – yep… its pretty rubbish…and I don’t like any of the toys they have either
A – no
E – and they don’t share
A – they don’t share…but you don’t like their toys, you don’t like the toys?
E – but I share things with them
A – do they like the things you like?
E – humm…they like colouring, I’ve got lots of colouring pencils at home, I’ve got more than, more than these ones.
A – more
E – well, I’ve got better colours
A – better colours
E – umm
A – are these colours not any good
E – they’re ok, they’re just not as good as mine at home, I’ve got a skin coloured one.
A – have you?
E – I could draw a person, but I can’t, I can’t draw a person without skin colour
A – hum, it’d be hard for you to draw a skin coloured person, without a skin coloured pencil
E – umm
A – you could draw a different coloured person
E – hum? I don’t want to
A – you don’t want to
E – no, I think I’m finished
A – you think you’re finished, ah ha
E – oh wait
A – you’re going to sign
E – yep, my mum makes me put my name on everything
A – name on everything…ellie
E – I’m finished now
A – are you pleased with your picture?
E – [pause] yeah…its…its nice
A – what do you like best?
E – I think I like the fish in the river…because they’re in the water
A – because they’re in the water and you like the water
E – [gets something from the box]…I like dinosaurs
A – you like dinosaurs
E – um hum…[lays cards out] that ones the scary one
A – um…
E – i…
A – that is the scary one
E – I like…I like…[moves cards around] can’t find it
A – you can’t find the one you like
E – I don’t think they’ve got it
A – you don’t think the one you like is there
E – ah, I’ve got it
A – you’ve found it
E – that’s the scariest one
A – oh, that’s the scariest one
E – um hum
A – do you know how to say that, I don’t know if I could pronouce that
E – velociraptor
A – ver – loss – say – rap – ter, umm…that’s the scariest one in the pack
E – yep, it can run really fast
A – really fast
E – and its got massive claws
A – its got massive claws
E – um, and huge teeth
A – huge teeth
E – lots of people think that the tyrannosaurs rex is the scariest one, but that’s the scariest one
A – but not ellie, you think that one is the scariest one
E – I’m gonna keep that one out, on the top
A – you’d like to keep that one out…
E – yep
A - …would you?
E – hum, it says aged 84, but it only has 3 candles on the cake (laughs)
A – only 3 candles on the cake
E – [gets something from the box] can I put this on the carpet
A – well, I’m wondering if it may be better on a sheet of paper ellie, would that be alright with you?
E – we can put it on this one so you don’t have to waste it
A – I’ll move that across to there…sometimes it sticks onto the lid…would you like me to help
E – yes please…wow…what should I make
A – oh…have you got any ideas?
E – hum…whats green…maybe I’ll just…maybe I could make an alien
A – ah ha, an alien
E – I need a good colour, but maybe I could just…or an octopus, I’m going to make an octopus
A – an octopus
E – I need to give it eight legs
A – that’s another water thing
E – um hum… I wish I was born in the water, I wish I was a mermaid actually
A – do you?
E – um hum
A – you wish you were a mermaid
E – um hum
A – what would that mean?...you could stay in the water?
E – I could stay in the water for as long as I want, and I could hold my breath underneath the water, for as long as I could and if I was clever, I’d be able to go out of the water as well, so I’d be two things
A – would you?...a mermaid and…I don’t know, what would be the opposite of a mermaid
E – a person
A – a land person
E – just a person
A – so you would like to be able to do both?...that’d be pretty cool
E – yes, it would
A – you’re making legs
E – I just didn’t want them on the bottom of the body…it’s a bit rubbish…hum
A – you think its rubbish
E – I’m not very good at doing this, but its fun
A – you’ve given it lots of legs, very good
E – my brother always laughs at me when I’m making things
A – hum, and how do you feel about that?...being laughed at?
E – hum, its not very nice…I don’t like it
A – you don’t, ay?
E – I don’t laugh at my younger brother
A – is it the, you’re older brother…what’s you’re older brothers name?
E – um, his name is David
A – good, and your younger brother
E – his name is Jonathan
A – David and Jonathan…so David laughs
E – um hum
A – and you don’t laugh at Jonathan?
E – apart from one time
A – ah, apart from the one time
E – when he did a really funny picture
A – wow
E – I need to give it some eyes
A – so, what happened that one time, he drew the funny picture
E – he laughed as well, so its ok
A – so that sounds like he was laughing, you were laughing together.
E – yep
A – so, ellie and Jonathan laughed together…and what does it feel like when David laughs…does it feel like its together
E – hum…no
A – no
E – sometimes…depends if he’s happy or angry at me…[pause]…tricky…I’ll put a smile on his face
A – a smiley octopus
E – done
A – done?
E – he could even…go in ther
A – with the fish
E – um hum…opps…he swashed one…its ok for the fish cause they can swim in the water
A – what do you think they’re going to get up to now, the four fish and the octopus?
E – I think the octopus is going to get all the fish together and hug them all at the same time
A – ha
E – or they’ll play hide and seek…I’m good at hide and seek…I always find good hiding spots
A – do you?...you’re good at hiding
E – yep
A – wow
E – hiding
A – is that a game you play with your brothers?
E – um hum…I’ve got this one spot they don’t know about…and they’ve never found me there and its underneath the bed…because the mattress comes off and they don’t know that and I can get underneath
A – you’ve found a good way to hide
E – um hum…and they always get bored, and I have to come out and I tell them to go hide first so they don’t see me or I do it cleverly
A – it sounds like…they would never find you there [pause]…you look quite pleased with yourself
E – it means I don’t have to put up with them
A – so its quite a good way of getting away from them
E – um hum
E – huh…it’s a crocodile
A – um
E – if that went in there it’d eat all the fish
A – oh no
E – I’ll put him back
A – that made you laugh
E – because its funny
A – its funny, hum
E – ah, there we go...the octopus can see better now
A – it can see the fish

N – yeah [pause] … do you have any ides of what I might draw?
A – ahh, you’d like me to suggest something
N – yes, please
A – ummm….ummm. why don’t you start off by choosing a colour
N – green…I think I might…

    [pause]
N – don’t know hat else to put there
A – you don’t know what else to put there
N – no
A – I wonder…I wonder if you might like to draw a pisture of your family on there
N – ok

    [pause]
N – no that’s too dark…I’m gonna draw myself first
A – your going to draw yourself first

    [pause]
N – I’ve got a purple dress on because I like purple
A – you like purple
N – yeah…and then…umm…I’ll draw my mum
A – next to you
N –she’s a bit taller than me and she’s got big, long blond hair
A – she’s got long blond hair
N – but my mum and dad aren’t together, but I’ll draw him without us, even though we would be all standing together
A – so you’re going to draw your dad there
N – he did have brown hair, but he’s a bit grey now, I’ll mix in some grey
A – he did have brown hair
N – yeah

[pause]
A – that is brown hair and dad’s hair’s grey now
N – um hum
A – do you have any brothers or sisters
N – well my dad has two kids, so they’re my half brothers and sisters…so this is my half brother and this is my half sister…and I’ll put a blue t-shirt on my half brother, and I’ll draw my sister with dark pink, yeah
A – and do you get to spend time with them?
N – sometimes, yep…but only when I have time, or they have time
A – yep, and they are smaller then you
N – yep
A – is there anyone else you want to draw in the picture
N – no…I’d like to play with something
A – you’d like to play with something
N – I used to have a big one of these
A – did you?
N – yep, this is baby simba
A – baby
N – I used to have a big one
A – and did he have a name?
N – simba
A – simba
N – because its simba
A – it is simba
N – I didn’t give it that name…maybe I’ll see if he’s ok
A – you’re going to check his heart
N – I think its ok
N – its beating
A – is it beating…hard?
N – its going, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom
A – that sounds healthy
N – that’s good
A – so you think it sounds healthy?
N – I can listen to my own heart
A – umm
N – boom, boom, yeah
A – yeah
N – yeah, I think its healthy…because it’s the same
A – it’s the same
N – so it must be
A – yep

    [pause]
A – little dog
N – I always wanted a pet
A – did you?
N – yeah, but I was…I was never allowed a pet
A – oh, what would of you had it you’d been allowed a pet?
N – I liked cats, but maybe a dog would do nicely…look their hugging each other
A – umm

    [pause]
A – it was lovely when they were hugging, wasn’t it
N – what else is there…maybe I’ll put them to sleep
A – ahhh, you’re going to put them to bed
N – they’re together
A – they look happy together, don’t they?

    [pause]
N – maybe mouse can join them…’hello, can I come in your bed?’…’noo’…’ohhh’…poor mouse
A – poor mouse
N – he’s not allowed
A – simbe didn’t like him
N – no…I don’t know why…he’s only small…maybe he can ask the dog…’could I come in’…’yes’, you can come in’…now its ok
A – good…all three of them are together

    [pause]
N – ‘its time to get up now, wake up, wake up’…’no, I don’t want to get up’…’you have to get up’…’no’…they want to keep sleeping…sooty wants to play
A – sooty wants to play
N – yes, he wants to play…’come on’…’no, we want to sleep’…poor sooty, he just wants to play
A – ummm, and how’s he feeling?
N – lonely
A – ummm
N – maybe he wants to go and see bear?
A – I think he might want to go see bear
N – ‘hello bear’…’hello’…’are you sitting here all alone’…’yes’…’do you want to play with me?’…’yes’…’what shall we play?’…’hummm? I don’t know, we could be mummy and daddy’…’nut you’re a man’…’but I can pretend to be mummy’…’ok’…

    [pause]
…’shall we get the house’…’ I think the house may be too big for us’…’but we can still try and play inside’…’I’m going to do some cooking’…’but I’m pretending to be mummy, I’ll do the cooking’…’ok, well I’ll go and watch some television, whilst you cook some food’
A – what do you think about that game?
N – just… I don’t know
A – well, they’re very clever to have worked that out, those two bears, aren’t they?
N – that mummy should cook and daddy should sit?
A – how to…how to play together…even though one of them is a man
N – you can always pretend though can’t you
A – you can
N – use your imagination
A – you can…sooty’s waiting for his dinner
N – ‘here you go sooty I madeyou dinner’…’thank you mummy, but you still have a really deep voice’…’opps, sorry I forgot, here’s your dinner’
A – um hum
N – they’re still sleeping over there
A – they’re still asleep
N – yeah…they’re all missing out on the play
A – you think they’re missing out
N – yeah, they’re dreaming about it though, but maybe they’ll wake up…’ohh, we’re awake’…’can we join in?’…’no, its our game’…’but we want to join in’…’ok you can be the children, come on mummy bear, we have to cook everybody dinner now, even the children’…see they’re all together
A – now they’re all together…now they’re all together having some fun
N – yep
A – what do you think is going to go on next?
N – there might be a fight, a fight over the dinner…’mummy bears made dinner’…’here you go children’…;yum yum yum’…’I want some of yours’…’I don’t have enough’…’give me some of yours’…’no, I want some’…poor little mouse can’t have some, so he’s going to go without foods
A – oh no
N – rahhh
A – can anyone help poor little mouse?
N – maybe daddy…’daddy, daddy, they’re fighting over the food and not letting me have any’…’oh no, I’ll sort this situation out, naughty children, don’t fight over the food, you have to let little mouse have some as well’…’sorry daddy, I’m just really hungry, because I’m really big’…’yes, but there is enough for everybody, now share nicely’…now its all sorted.
A – its all sorted
N – yep
A – and daddy helped out
N – yep, daddy helps

    [pause]
N – poor little mouse, he always gets bullied
A – um, he always gets bullied?
N – yeah
A – how do you think the mouse feels when he gets bullied?
N – sad…he feels helpless, because he’s small
A – he feels helpless because he’s small
N – but one day he’ll be big, so its alright
A – you think that it’ll be alright because one day he’ll be tall, and Simba’s big already
N – yep, yeah he’s big
A – big and hungry
N – big and hungry
A – and the dog
N – well he’s in the middle so he gets forgotten a lot
A – ah, that can’t be good
N – because the biggest and the smallest of all always gets all the attention
A – ah
N – yeah, but the one in the middle always gets left out
A – but the one in the middle is always left out
N – yeah
A – does that happen with you
N – well, because I was always by myself and alone its ok…now I’m the oldest, so its ok
A – you’re the oldest
N – and its good I’m like simba, rahhh
A – you’re like simba
N – um hum…I’ll check if he’s still ok
A – check his heart again
N – yeah, its still ok
A – his heartbeat is still ok
N – I can’t hear mouse’s heart, because its so small.. ah, I can hear it now
A – you can hear it, you’ve got it..is it ok?
N – it sounds weak, maybe he needs nursing
A – he needs some nursing?
N – he needs help, I’ll put him to bed…I need to find some medicine…I’ll give him something to drink
A – something to drink…is he taking it?
N – I think so…I’ll give him a bit more
A – a bit more
N – I’ll see if there’s anything else I can give him…maybe I can look inside, ‘say ahhhh’…’ahhhh’… yep he looks dehydrated
A – ahhh, he needs a drink…ah
N – ambulance is there, just in case we need to call the ambulance, if he doesn’t get better
A – are you going to check inside again…how’s he doing?
N – I think he’s going to be ok, mummy bear can look after him
A – mummy bears stroking his forehead…
N – I think she’s checking his heart [pause] … maybe he wants a toy… I think he just needs a hug, we’ll see [pause] …mouse is going to come and see if he’s ok… ‘are you ok’…he’s not responding
A – oh no
N – I think he’s sleeping
A – you think he’s asleep
N – yep
A – maybe check him again
N – maybe he needs a real doctor, I don’t know, I wonder what mummy bear thinks
A - what mummy bear thinks
N – his head feels warm, but I think he’s… I think he’s ok, I’ll listen again
A – umm…mummy bear’s looking worried
N – I think his heartbeat is getting better now… he just needs more rest
A – more rest
N – yeah… little mousey can get into bed with him

    [pause]
A – they look very comfortable together, don’t they
N – they are very comfortable together [pause]…we don’t need the ambulance
A – don’t we… you think mummy bear’s going to look after him ok?
N – ‘is everything ok mummy bear’…’yes’…’ I’ll give you a hug and everything will be ok’…they’re hugging each other…mummy bear gets a kiss
A – from daddy
N – from daddy…he’s going to sit back and watch television again…mummy bear does a lot of cooking…she’s going to make soup
A – um, soup… so daddy can put his feet up
N – so daddy can put his feet up, yeah
A – she’s a very loving mummy bear isn’t she?
N – yeah, she’s really good… that’s how I’d want my home to be
A – would you

Elham Issari and Alyson

E – can I look
A – of course you can

    [pause]

E – can we just paint…yeah

[pause]

A – there’s a lot going on in that picture…is there more to do?
E – that’s my home
A – that’s your home
E – yeah…so there’s a lot more to do…would you like me to stop?
A – no

[pause]

E – I think I’m done

A – you’d like two
E – yeah…these are my fish…this is loui, my fish who died
A – oh
E – he died last week, but the other three are still alive, that’s the garden
A – and do you ride the horses
E – I’m not allowed to at the moment, but next year
A – next year…is that because your not allowed
E – my dad doesn’t let me, he thinks I’m too young
A – and you have fish, but ones dead, how did you feel when he dies
E – I felt sad
A – and that was last week
E – yep…I didn’t see him though, cause my mum, yeah…put him in the ground, but she told me
A – and you’ve got a mum in the kitchen
E – yeah…mum’s always in the kitchen
A – she makes you stuff
E – yeah
A – and cooks meals
E – cause she always wants to watch me…when I’m in the garden… she does the dishes
A – she likes to keep you inside with her…so do these horses have names
E – yes, this one is my real horse, her name is puna
A – puna
E – puna
A – puna
E – yeah
A –did you chose that name
E – no, my mum chose it, but I like it
A – you like it
E – yeah…and this one doesn’t have a name, just my imaginary one
A – your imaginary one
E – yeah
A – they look very happy
E -…yeah…yeah, I think she would be happier if she had a friend
A – do you
E – yeah…she’s lonely
A – you think she’s lonely
E – I think she’s lonely
A – do you spend time with her?
E – yeah, I spend all of my time with her…yeah
A – when?
E – when I come back from school
A – when you come back from school…your dad doesn’t let you ride the horses
E – no, he thinks I’ll fall off…but next year I can
A – do you look forward to that?
E – yeah
A – there are trees…that looks interesting…to have lots of trees…in the picture there are three
E – I think there’s more that three, I’ve never counted them, so…yeah, I think there’s more
A – are you pleases with your picture?

E – no, my dad’d at work
A – your dads ar work
E – ‘cause it’s the daytime
A – ‘cause it’s the daytime….

    [pause]
…is there anything else you’d like to do?
E – well, I’d like to make him black, because the other one’s black
A – the other one’s black
E – yep

    [pause]
A – now he’s black…are you pleased with that
E – yep…[pause]…my hairs brown
A – brown hair

    [pause]
E – now its done
A – now its done
E – do you like it
A – I do…there’s a lot in it
E – thank you
A – do you want to do another, or do you want to choose something different? What do you want to do?
E – can I do another one?
A – ummm…put that one aside…do you like drawing?
E – I love drawing
A – I can tell

[pause]

E – I’m done
A – is it finished?
E – yeah
A – what’s happening in this one?
E – this is my horse, and this is me riding my horse, and that’s mum in the kitchen, and that’s a baby horse
A – that’s  a baby horse is it?
E – because I want them to have a baby
A – you want them to have a baby, do you?
E – and we’ll be together
A – and you’ll be together…ohh, and that’s what you dream about
E – yeah
A – in a years time then
E – yep
A – you’re mums still watching you
E – yeah, ‘cause she cares
A – she cares…you want to so something else
E – I forgot
